Tapovan: On the right banks of Ganga

Tapovan is comparatively new area of Rishikesh and has grown very fast and developed in last 15 years only. It used to be a village area with paddy fields and was famous for its rice and smell of the paddy all over in the season. Today Tapovan harbours more than 750 guest houses and hotels with many big restaureants . The main food areas are

HIgh Bank area: This is a hidden area in Tapovan with some of the best located Guset houses e.g High Bank Peasants Cottage, Swiss Cottage by Sylves, Zostel, Hostelier, Mount veiw, & Mamas Cottage. Some of the best restaurants here are Nirvana Bistro, Pinkies cafe & Bar ( One can get Alcohol here)

Laxman Jhula : Left & Right side of the Bridge

Laxman Jhula area is another good place on the left and right banks of Ganga. There are many small cafes here on the right bank and few famous one on the left bank ( Tehra Manzil Side). Some of the main one are Budha Cafe, Freedom Cafe

As now the old Laxman jhula bridge is closed and the new bridge is under construction and might open by the end of this year or early next year 2024.

Ram Jhula Area & Swarg Ashram

Ram Jhula is considered the right bank ( Town Side) and has a new Choti Wala restaurant which is branch of the old one on the left side. Other than that there are few Dhabas serving the pilgrims.

Swarg Ashram is the left bank of the river with the main ashrams in the area and has the old & famous Rishikesh Chotiwala. Even much before the construction of the Ram Jhula bridge tourists and pilgrims used to take the ferry boat across the river and eat the food of Chotiwala.

Another old and famous restaurant here the Swarga Ashram walo ki Mithai ki dukan. Tourists as well as locals of the Rishikesh used to enjoy the sweets and Deshi Ghee Poori Aloo here for many decades, as they sell Poori by weight and Aloo sabzi with it. Locals used take the Pooris to ghats and enjoy with their families & guests. One still take it and enjoy the meal on the near by beaches. They also make Deshi Meethaiya in Deshi Ghee.

Food in Rishikesh – Veg vis- a-vis Non Veg

Being a religious place all the food with in the municipal limits is fully vegetarian. One can not get even eggs all over the town limits. However with modern trends and demands there are many Non Vegetarians restaurants and few bars as well out side the municipal limits of Rishikesh. Mainly they are on Dehradun Road and out side the AIMs.

Bistro Nirvana in High Bank area Tapovan : Bistro Nirvana in High Bank is another good Indian food restaurant. Ira’s Cafe : Ira’s café on Tapovan village road is another hidden small café serving western cuisine. VJ’s Restaurant: VJ’s restaurant near Auto stand in Tapovan is famous wood fire thin crest Pizza and have a basic set up with great Ganga view and Ram Jhula in backdrop.
