Many decades before from the early 20th century Rishikesh was mainly a town of Ashrams on the clean banks of Ganga full of nature & forest. , where many Sanyasi & peace lovers use to make it their second home and spend lot of time in the area. Many big Industrial houses like Birla and many others invested to build ashrams & Dharmshalas for peace seekers.
Although a big concrete jungle has taken over both the banks of Ganga the town still pulls many peace lovers from world over to quench their spiritual thirst.

Shivananda Ashram: Started by swami Shivananda it is situated just above Ram Jhula on the right banks of the river. This Ashram is still popular among the genuine seekers from world over and also has some overseas branches. This is also the Divine life Society started by swami Shivananda. There are Yoga classes, free food & stay with daily Ashram schedule full of spiritual discourses and activities.
Swami Dayanand Ashram: Situated on the right banks of the Ganga in shesham Jhari* area Dayananda Ashram is known for studies on Vedanta. The ashram runs many courses for Yoga & Vedanta round the year and has big residential area for the seekers.
Sadhana Kendra by Swami Rama : Situated in the southern part of Rishikesh this ashram was started by was started by the author of ” A autobiography of a HImalayan Yogi” swami Rama who also established the biggest Medical College & hospital in north India ” Himalayan Hospital & Institute of Medical Sciences” near the Jolly Grant Airport.
Cultural Rishikesh:
Ganga Arti on the banks of the Ganga River a major cultural attraction today and attended by hundreds of pilgrims & tourist everyday. The Ganga Aarti is organised at many places in different part of town e.g. Tapovan Lakshman Jhula, Shatrughan Ghat & Parmarth Niketan at Ram Jhula & Triveni Ghat in downtown.
